In the areas with heavy traffic the penetration bitumen gained form the refinery which is used on the pavement is unable to meet the expected performance due to increasing number of vehicles. In order to increase the performance of the coating, the bitumen or the mixture containing bitumen should be modified. In both cases, the target is to upgrade the performance of the coating at low and high temperatures.

The benefits of the modification on the bitumen and the mixture containing bitumen are as follows:

The service temperature range of the bitumen expands. The softening point rises and the fragility point decreases. Thus, the sensitivity of the bitumen to the change in temperature is reduced, and its resistance to the permanent deformation rises.

The exhaustion resistance under the repeated loads increases.

The adhesion improves, and a rise is seen in the stripping resistance.

Due to high viscosity of the modified bitumen, the bitumen film around the aggregate gets thicker and aging slows down.
