
The manhole covers which are low or remain above the road level were once among the most important problems of Istanbul and were creating great hazards to the drivers for safety. After ŬSFALT started working in the manhole leveling field, majority of the manhole covers in the main arteries are no a problem.
In Istanbul, there are around 200.000 manholes, 33,000 being at the arteries. Due to the new system commissioned by ŬSFALT in 2000, of these manholes, 92 .431 were brought to the same level as the road, thereby, eliminating the danger to the drivers. When the efforts of the municipalities are added to this ratio, problem of low or high level manholes in Istanbul were solved to a great extent.
How does the system work?
First of all, the manhole to be worked on is determined. Then, the manhole cutting vehicle is brought to the appropriate position and the cutting procedure is initiated. The manhole cutting vehicle which completes the cutting procedure within two minutes cuts the asphalt of the manholes in a circular form. After cutting procedure is completed, the manhole cover is dismantled and is cleaned. Then, the manhole cover is placed in its position and leveling is made with gauge. After such procedure, interior manhole mould is placed. Then, a special additive is prepared and cast appropriately. In the next step, concrete rising element is placed. Again, the special additive is cast. After the cover is placed and final leveling adjustment is made, this additive is cast. Finally, the manhole cover is placed and asphalt is laid on top of it.
